What's Old Is New Again

We're home. The friend whose house we were staying at came back the other day and stayed at Finn's mother's house. We spent the day with him as he came over to have coffee in the morning and later supper with us. In between we took Finn to Inver Beach, where he had some fun. He's a fierce one when it comes to sticks 😄 We didn't bring balls with us, so sticks were an acceptable substitute.
Not to worry--he had balls back at the house.
You can see that it was a grey day--the wind was sharp. I was glad I brought a cowl so my ears were very well protected.

He could tell something was up after supper as I started packing and he was subdued and looking at me with his big brown eyes. I explained that his mom was coming home and he'd be so happy to see her. Of course he just kept watching me--poor guy understands what suitcases and bags mean.

Yesterday we left early enough to stop at the grocery store, haul our stuff in, and have coffee here while they were on their way to the airport. Since we're not that far from the airport and it's a two hour trip one way from Finn's home, it made sense to do it that way. I was sad when I said good-bye to Finn and he was too, but I knew he'd be very happy shortly thereafter when he saw his mother after a month apart. I'm told that's exactly what happened--he was very quiet and somber until they were at the airport and then the joy arrived. He was apparently shattered last night.

As I was putting the groceries away, I discovered that the food in our very small freezer compartment in our under-the-counter fridge was no longer frozen. Thankfully there wasn't much in it--probably around €10 worth--but still, I don't like to waste food. There was nothing else to do but throw it out though. I'm not sure what happened--the food was cold and the fridge seemed to work fine. I'd bought a few things to put into the freezer so I did that and decided to see what would happen. I figured that since it was still keeping things cold it'd be safe and if I had to, I could cook everything and keep it in the fridge to eat over the next several days. Thankfully that won't be necessary since this morning everything is frozen solid.

I got the rest of my stuff put away this morning and am getting my head into normal life mode again. I'm having a laugh or two at myself because we were gone long enough for me to do many things on autopilot at our friend's house. We've spent just less than half of our time there in the last 4 months. Now that we're home, I sometimes find myself having to stop and remember how I do things here, where things are, and that kind of thing. Time to put away the new autopilot that became normal and embrace the old autopilot which seems new again. And the beat goes on...

I wonder if you had a power failure during that time -- a storm or even a cut line. I'm sorry about the food, I know what you mean about wasting it. Finn must have adored you! I'm sure it's wonderful to be home, but he is a cutie and probably fun to be around. Still, that's a long time to be away from your own space. Welcome home!

I love that second photo of Finn with his tennis balls. It's funny how quickly dogs get used to people, and they don't forget people either. Or other dogs for that matter. We had a very large German Shepard mixed dog and we used to put him in a very good kennel when we would be away. One year we had my mother-in-law come and pick him up, and she said when he saw her he was doing back flips (well not literally) around when he saw her at the kennel. I'm sure next time you dog sit Finn will be thrilled to see you again. Glad it was a good visit and that you're settled back at home. Hope the freezer situation gets squared away too.

Thanks, Jeanie! I'm grateful that the little freezer space still works. I'm not sure what happened. It'll remain a mystery.

Thanks, Erika! Freezer seems to be working. Finn's a great little dog. He's known us since he was a couple months old, but there have been gaps in terms of how often we've seen him during the past 7 years. But no matter how big the gaps, he plays the same game with Bill that he did when he was a very young pup. 🙂

I too wonder if you may have had a power failure during that time, a shame about the food waste though, but clearly beyond your control.
I think Finn is a sweetie, I did enjoy the photographs you've shared.
Enjoy settling back into the routine of being home ...

All the best Jan

Thanks, Jan! A power cut is certainly possible if it occurred close enough to the time of our return that the food didn't have time to refreeze. I'm glad it's still functioning.

Glad that you didn’t have a freezer full of expensive treats that got spoiled. Still, as you say, it irks to waste food. Maybe Bill will run to fetch balls for you to ease the translation into life sans Finn. Be sure to post pictures!

Bill and I are agreed that we're happy to have a ball break for the time being, David. :-)

Finn is a really cute dog. It's amazing how we can 'read' their emotions, isn't it? I'm sure he was over the moon when "mom" got home but wonder if he wonders where you are now? I'm glad your freezer is working again. That's annoying. I don't like to waste food either but have done it many times over the years but letting something expire or get freezer burn. sigh...not good. Have a wonderful weekend. Our high tomorrow is 13˚F, I think. We have not been above freezing in about a month. I am tired of the cold. Hugs- Diana

I hope it warms up for you soon, Diana. The snowdrops have started blooming here. Yes, I'm told that Finn was wondering where we were. It takes him a short time to adjust when mom goes away, but then he gets into his Shari and Bill routine. Then when mom returns, it takes him a bit of time to get out of that routine and back to normal. He's pretty adaptable in some ways but once he's gotten into whatever routine he's in with whomever he's with, he likes things a certain way :-)
