When I watch youtube videos, it's almost always an independent person who may or may not have a monetized channel. I know that some of them rely on income from youtube to one degree or another, so when the ads play, I let them run so they can get those few cents of revenue. I do draw the line at ridiculously long ads--I've had some as long as 28 minutes start to play (who watches that?). Once I left a 15 minute ad playing, went downstairs to make a cup of tea, brought it back upstairs, had a bathroom break, and settled back in to watch the video. But usually I skip the long ones. Lately I've been getting ads that are almost 3 minutes long going on about how people should visit the 'U'SA. Given this story, I'm thinking it might not be a good idea. Nothing there is worth the risk of spending over a month and counting in a detention center for no reason.
This German woman was spending the winter in Mexico. Her friend had moved to southern California so they planned to meet in Tijuana, cross the border and spend a month together. The German woman had all her papers in order, including a ticket back to Berlin. She was detained by the border patrol, tossed into solitary confinement, and was unable to contact anyone. She is still there after more than a month. She wants to leave (who wouldn't?) but they're keeping her locked up. There are so many beautiful places in the world. Maybe avoid this country for the time being.

We had been troubled by many aspects of life in the United States for many years, but we did visit two or three times per year, anyway. The birding was great, one of Miriam’s sisters lives in Virginia, and we had really good friends in California. The breaking point for us was the Sandy Hook Massacre. There have been many other reasons since then, but our last visit to the United States was in 2012; we have not returned since, nor ever will.
I hope your sister -in-law will be OK in all of the mayhem, David.
She has become an all-in MAGA adherent, so she will doubtless be enjoying the early days of dystopia. Whether she will enjoy what’s still to come is another matter entirely.
That's a shame. And very sad.
I've been to Mexico and LOVED it there. We have plans in place if everything hits the fan.
I'm sure this poor woman wishes she'd stayed in Mexico and gone home from there. Now she's being moved from one detention center to another and she's done nothing wrong.
Hi, Shari. I'm glad I found your blog.I used to enjoy reading your posts regularly bfore you moved from Facebook.
Sam still has some of the plants you gave him when you moved away from here.
We're still in Klamath Falls, where 72% of the county voted MAGA. Everyday life continues, but each day there is a new horror from the kleptocracy. My mom is totally MAGA, and my sister and I aren't speaking to her anymore because of it. It's scary, infuriating, and heartbreaking to be an American now.
Hi Deidre! It's so nice to hear from you! I'm happy that Sam still has some of the plants even after all this time! He's definitely the person that could nurture them for that long! Has he read The Light Eaters? Fascinating book!
I'm so sorry about your mom. That's a really hard situation. I 'divorced' my family of origin in the 90s and it was liberating, but your situation is different and more painful, I'm sure.
I agree--it's all of those things. I was having a conversation with someone while waiting for the bus the other day--not from the town where we live, but on the same bus route. She brought up the political system in the US and I was clear what I felt about it. She was sort of dancing around things and making vague statements that I didn't quite understand. Thankfully the bus came and there were no seats around me--LOL--I was tired and didn't feel up to trying to figure out her views or having a discussion. Most people here are appalled and now the PM will be popping up in the White House with his bowl of shamrock. It seems ridiculous, but I suppose diplomacy so often requires these kinds of things.
Glad to hear from you and say hi to Sam!
